Dr Upadrasta (Ram) Ramamurty

Scientific Advisor on Metallurgy and Materials Science

Ram advises HSC on the development and application of advanced scientific materials in solving energy transition challenges.

He is a leading materials engineer and scientist based in Singapore with 30 years of research and applications experience. His research is focused on solving the fundamental scientific and technological challenges that fall within the materials / mechanics domains, and which have direct application to advanced manufacturing as well as the structural integrity and reliability of components.

He received his PhD degree in Engineering from Brown University, USA in 1994. Subsequently he has worked at the University of California at Santa Barbara, the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (“MIT”), and has served as a faculty member at the Indian Institute of Science in Bangalore, India during which he was a visiting scientist at many universities and organisations such as Cambridge University and ExxonMobile. He has advised Boeing, Rolls Royce, General Motors, Makino Asia Pvt. Ltd and HP Inc on metallurgical and materials science-based application solutions.

He has co-authored more than 400 papers in peer reviewed international journals (https://scholar.google.com/citations?user=D3crxPkAAAAJ&hl=en) and is an editor of Acta Materialia and Scripta Materialia which are the leading scientific journals for materials research. He is an elected Fellow of both the National Academies of Engineering and Sciences of India, and The World Academy of Sciences (TWAS). He is a recipient of the Scopus Young Scientist and the National Metallurgist Day awards, the Shanti Swarup Bhatnagar and TWAS prizes (both in the Engineering Sciences category), and the Swarnajayanthi and JC Bose National Fellowships. He has delivered the CNR Rao Prize Lecture in Advanced Materials of the Materials Research Society of India and the Lee Hsun Award Lecture of the Institute of Metal Research, Chinese Academy of Sciences.
